Your Heart’s Calling
by Gina Capristo-Gajdosik
Find a way to honor your heart’s greatest calling every day. It doesn’t need to be monetized, or the way you choose or need to make a living. It is food for your soul. God has embedded within you a specific ability that is truly unique and truly yours. No one else can be Bill Gates or David Bowie. I once heard Bowie say that he felt uncomfortable being called a musician because he was not proficient at playing an instrument, he was more comfortable being called an “artist.” This is extremely interesting because in truth, being just a musician is not sufficient in modern times. You do need to be an actor, a model, a business person, a producer, a leader, a performer, an editor…do you see how this leads to human growth? My favorite artist currently is Karen Marie Ørsted, “MØ” a Danish singer who records her vocals in the closet of her childhood bedroom and who designs her own album art, posters and music videos. She is a one-woman industry, fueled by her passion for her original music, which is truly ORIGINAL.
There is an interesting paradox about originality; it calls forth imitators, not just the kind of imitators that steal, but the kind that re-create something new. The Sex Pistols started an entire movement. Punk Rock turned into New Wave, which turned into Grunge. It is the best kind of imitation; that which is fueled by love and excitement. Oddly enough, “MØ” brand of music was fueled by “The Spice Girls.” You never know who you will inspire with your work.
Set the chart of your life’s path. Start now. Even if you never make a cent from your special gift, even if you only do it an hour a day, do it. I promise you, amazing things will happen. I know this personally. I may not have reached the pinnacle of what I desire from my writing and producing films but I cannot even imagine never having the experiences of the last twenty years of trying, learning, growing, being elated and deflated. It has all made me who I am today. I wear the scars as well as the gold star. I have learned about worlds I would not have researched or visited. I met people I would never have met, people who live in countries I would have never seen. Life is experience, not material. It is fleeting, so the only thing you can take with you to the “Other Side” is your thoughts and feelings and memories.
The way we are raised should not be how we remain. I grew up in a working-class family, in a house with no books and I still became a writer. However, I remember that whenever I rode alone in the backseat of my parent’s car, I would pretend I was in a limo; I was a rock star or a tennis star, a celebrity. I would make up my story; I am still making up stories. Life is a never-ending chance to begin again. Every day brings with it a chance to make a different choice. Be curious. Be adventurous and determined. Find a way. Our brilliance comes from our authenticity, so like “MØ” and Bowie, and countless others who have reached the pinnacle of what it means to be human.
Be authentically you.
